When I first learnt VCS, I focused on history. It was only later I realised that it's wonderful for temporary notes too.
I write a lot of `// here` and `// here?` comments now, as I can easily discard them once I've committed the interesting bit.
I think it'd be really hard to replace git. Even if your notgit had 2x git's usability and 2x performance, there's a learning curve to any VCS tool. Incentivising new users would be tricky.
GitHub is also so widely used that adoption of anything else is hard.

They report declining usage with <1% of new users using it. Given the additional work required to support both, I understand. VCS variety is worthwhile though: perhaps hg-only platforms are easier to support.
