What are the refactorings that you consider essential? Is there a minimum set? More interestingly, can an IDE be complete?

The line between 'group chat' tool and 'web forum' seems increasingly blurry. What are the essential differences? The ability to edit? "$USER is typing" information? Threading? Simply the culture around the tool?

Today I learnt about the redisplay function in Emacs lisp! This function allows Emacs to redraw the GUI. It's really useful when you're doing computation in a loop, and essential if you're using spinner.el.

What are the refactorings that you consider essential? Is there a minimum set? More interestingly, can an IDE be complete, such that there are no extra refactorings that a user wishes to use?
