ASCII strings are so convenient. Byte length and character (grapheme) length are the same, and display length is simple too (tabs are the main fiddly bit).
As soon as you have Unicode, you need to distinguish these and use non-trivial libraries!

I'm debating whether `from foo import *` is a bad feature for my toy programming language.
Forcing `import foo as f` and later `f::bar()` is so much more amenable to local static analysis. You also don't get issues with name clashes.
It's certainly convenient though.
I find that I'm choosing AI tools based on the quality of the harness rather than the model.
For example, I'm using Claude Code Web because its model of remote VMs is extremely convenient. I'm using Perplexity because it's tuned really well for web searches.
When I moved back to the UK, I ordered SIMs for both myself and my wife. We ended up with consecutive numbers!
It's really convenient sometimes.
