I really admire how seriously Emacs looks after your undo state. Not enough software will warn you if you're about to discard undo information.

Could you write a formatter in terms of a list of lexemes? A CST is a non-trivial bit of code for one use case.

If you do an initial pass to find items that only occur on one side, you can discard them before diffing! They'll always be shown as changed.
When I first learnt VCS, I focused on history. It was only later I realised that it's wonderful for temporary notes too.
I write a lot of `// here` and `// here?` comments now, as I can easily discard them once I've committed the interesting bit.
