I really enjoy meeting people who work with APIs that are directly tied to money. Financial services, gambling sites, and similar.
They tend to have excellent stories about bugs.

I do suspect there are some domains where the incentives don't work for FOSS though. Projects needs to be fun to work on (for small hobbyist/side projects) or valuable for corporations to publish (so they hire someone to work on it).
AAA games or tax software probably won't become FOSS. Am I too pessimistic?
Would it be possible to quantify perceived coolness of different programming languages?
My only idea so far is look at how many HN stories mention each language, relative to their usage levels (according to the SO survey).
