One interesting design choice in Emacs that I haven't seen in other editors: reserved shortcuts.
An Emacs extension shouldn't use F5 through F12, or Ctrl-c LETTER. This lets users configure their own shortcuts. https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/emacs/Key-Bindings.html
Does it exist elsewhere? I miss it in VS Code, where e.g. all the Fn keys are already assigned.
Playing with VS Code also reminds me how overloaded the tab key can be. It might do indentation, or LSP completion, or snippet completion, or Copilot completion.
In Emacs I've configured these operations on separate keys (e.g. yasnippet on SPC) which is less surprising.
It's a tragedy that ; and : are often on the same key on the keyboard, are often both legal syntax, and are so visually similar. I wonder how much programmer time has been wasted.
