OSS components are so common in software stacks now. It might be an interesting exercise to try to build a e.g. a web service with 100% proprietary components.

Reading the beta 4 release notes for Haiku R1, it's striking how much work it is to support modern WiFi protocols: https://www.haiku-os.org/get-haiku/r1beta4/release-notes/ Previously, 802.11ac was only supported on Linux and OpenBSD! (Ignoring proprietary operating systems)

When a project is 90%+ open source, it's hard to sell a proprietary bundle on top. OpenOffice/Star Office had this problem: Star Office had a grammar checker as its main selling point IIRC. This is a problem when the bundle funds much of the development work.
