I'm coming to the conclusion that /etc should be in a versioned file system (e.g. NILFS), or related tool like etckeeper.
I look forward to the day that not storing data on versioned file system is an optimisation, not a default.
So, apparently lisp machines had versioned file systems. It's a royal shame they haven't become popular on Linux systems.
