The big advantage of 'foo' and 'bar' is they're obviously placeholders. I find example code with other throwaway names to be confusing.

Docker is rather nice for throwaway shells. If I need a shell with a command that I don't have on my server, I can install it, perform the task, then throw away everything.

GitHub provides a REST API for rendering markdown! https://developer.github.com/v3/markdown/ It's handy for quick throwaway projects, but I'm struggling to think of where I'd use it otherwise.

I've created a throwaway email account to play with Gnus. It's surprising how many email providers disable IMAP by default these days.
