If twitter can be microblogging, then GIFs are mico screencasts. They're a brilliant way of showcasing Emacs packages (working on some now).
I don't often like screencasts as they're inflexible to the speed you work though them. I'd rather read. Pharo, however, benefits from them.
I prefer learning programming languages by reading tutorials, but I've found screencasts essential for getting started with Smalltalk.
