requires.io is cool. It automatically creates a PR if your dependencies are outdated. Travis then verifies them: https://github.com/Wilfred/trifle/pull/5

I'm experimenting with jj this weekend. It seems pretty nice so far, but the mental model is pretty different from git.
For example, there's no `checkout` command. You do `jj new ABC` to switch to a commit, which creates a new empty commit on top of ABC.
I really like the MELPA model of packaging directly from git. It solves the problem of forgetting to release something -- just merge a PR and you're done.
It also makes version number bumps much less important.
You could go even further in a statically typed language and also figure out when breaking changes occur.
