It's always depressing looking at the SSH logs for my tiny server. I have it appropriately locked down, but it's a sobering reminder of how hostile the internet can be.

The internet is an incredibly hostile place for unpatched devices. I'd be nervous about booting any older operating system in a VM and getting online. Maybe there's a sufficient age where it's safe again? I'm not sure if an MS-DOS VM would get automatically pwned today.

Is there a good term for projects that maintain a set of patches, but still track upstream? For example, IceWeasel and Firefox. The term "fork" tends to mean divergence and has a slightly more hostile vibe.
