Integration tests are inherently scary. You want to make them as similar as possible to your production environment, which massively increases the risk that one day they will talk to production directly.

I've been revisiting a 5 year old Emacs mode I wrote: https://github.com/Wilfred/logstash-conf.el It's nice to see that I've learnt tons in that time! I've massively improved indentation performance, corrected syntax highlighting, and even added a test suite.

I've found Inbox Zero to be useful approach with many communication systems: maintain a separate TODO list, minimise email, process them oldest first. There's a failure mode though: You get productive, allow the input rate to increase, then one day you massively fall behind. 😧
