LLVM is moving mailing lists to Discourse! I'm a big fan of Discourse's ability to summarise threads and richer formatting options.

When the LLVM Project was open sourced in 2003, it was a small project with a small community. The tools selected to support the project were chosen during a different time and a different situation.

The Stack Overflow/Discourse model is that you get more privileges as you're more active in a project. Could we do the same with git repos? Newbies get more guidance and guard rails, seasoned contributors get automatic merge powers if CI passes?

I'm gradually coming round to the view of the Discourse developers that comment trees are harmful. If I have a long discussion with someone, our comments get very narrow. Nonetheless, understanding the structure of conversation is valuable. I wish I knew of better tools.
