I think Discourse beats mailing lists in many circumstances. It's not yet well suited for sharing patches, but I'm hopeful for the future.

I write a lot of markdown, so I'm comfortable with the format, but *asterisks* for *italics* still seems strange to me. I mentally read it as bold, and some mailing list web frontends to the same thing.

LLVM is moving mailing lists to Discourse! I'm a big fan of Discourse's ability to summarise threads and richer formatting options.

I've stopped considering my email address as private data. Between GitHub and mailing lists it's too easy to obtain.
