I really like "zero cost abstractions" as a programming language motto. It's really effective for evaluating design decisions. I've heard it for both C++ and Rust. Are there other PL mottos that are equally helpful?

We talk about programming like it is about writing code, but the code ends up being less important than the architecture, and the architecture ends up being less important than social issues.

I suspect every programming language eventually becomes dated. As soon as you commit to 1.0, you will have design decisions that (with hindsight) are mistakes, and you can't fix them. Design best practices change over time too. Immutability is a more common default now.
